@"Blip Interactive" Not sure, but I wonder if they would have more uses if we could use any modulator in the multiplier slot rather than just macros. Would that cause technical problems?
-
@Will I missed it in theater, resigned myself to watching on a computer screen... Bad typography hurts users more than they know, so preventing font customization on a nice UI is really doing everyone’s mental and physical health a service! 👹

Tl; dr: NS2 rocks at automation workflow. NS2 fans love automation. The full glass looks so much tastier when NS2 takes us 85% of the way from day 1! 15% to go! Yum! I think it’s clear we will keep cheering @"Blip Interactive" every further step of the way. 🤓

@"Blip Interactive" Your description of the 80/20 rule and the 3 things to balance is super helpful in understanding this whole set of issues and the wisdom behind obsidian. Thank you! This whole discussion (and the other thread that branched out) just made me love obsidian as it currently is that much more!
-
@colonel_mustard That’s more than I’d come up with so far, and still leaves me suspecting we’re missing something. Ha! I wonder what @StevePAL recommends!
-
@StevePAL The app is so deep, it's a boon to have such helpful tutorials this early after its release!!

another + 1 ^

I like this kind of idea a lot. “Containers” in Bitwig are another example of a similar approach. Going down that path, tons of options open up. Nice! I do wonder how straightforward implementing this would be, though, especially if the module has to host things like auv3 and allow swapping them. (It might require making…

yum. Filters in series in obsidian = ws into lpf for days. Noice! Obsidian is so fun!

Hmm, apesoft replied to my question (email): “all the fx are post synth so after vco vca and vcf”. I’m very surprised that the distortion is post vcf, doesn’t sound like that at all to me. Interesting.
-
@dendy This made me realize I actually don’t know where the distortion is situated in mood’s signal chain. The UI makes it seem like it might be post filter, but for moog flavor it would make more sense for it to be occuring (in part) before and during the filter stage. Playing around with it just now it doesn’t sound post…

You can try DRC for free actually, so you can see for yourself. Also, FYI a version with auv3 is in late beta. Might still be worth asking to join testing. See this thread: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/30051/who-wants-to-test-drc-auv3/p1
-
@flockz Have you tried DRC? I haven't made up my mind about whether I prefer DRC or model D for minimoogish filter sounds, would be curious to hear your take. (I mean, running a single oscillator into the 24db LPF of DRC vs single model D oscillator set to same waveshape into filter. DRC isn't a minimoog clone (e.g.…
-
Yup the comparison is impressive. I’d be curious to see how close the two remain if the overdrive behavior is maxed out (slamming the mixer section with max level on osc 1 and on the ext instrument volume). Eg, around 8:15 in the video the overload light on the hardware seems to suggest there’s some non linear increase in…
-
Ya, i don’t mean just the aliasing, as I acknowledge above, it’s more complicated and interesting than that. I mean the whole overdrive the filter behavior, which in both Model D and DRC is controled via the combination of the mixer section and the filter section. (I don’t mean the oscillator though.)
-
@dendy Not easy to solve with mixdown though, precisely because it’s just part of the picture. I’d be all over an IAP (down the road, not now - I think the current development priorities are more important) that offers some extra (and more cpu hungry) filter option with Model D style quality in the behavior of the filter…

Will check p900 out!

Been reading up on digital filter design. Seems like a wonderful can of worms. One thing that might clarify the confusion I introduced and the complexity @dendy mentioned in distinguishing the importance of oversampling for distortion vs filter design: some of the stuff I just read reminded me that part of the classic Moog…
-
Super interesting comments folks! Keep it coming! @Cinebient I'm curious, what synth are you referring to which sounds better without OS than most with 8x? :D
-
All great points folks. @flockz Yes, part of the question is indeed: how much/little work would it actually take to just enable it 1b) style in the way @dendy describes. For the love of saturation! Animoog is a super interesting example of the kind of territory that might open up with that. Sounds to me like the filter…

+1
-
@dendy Ha, why am I not surprised? I have much more experience with OS and saturation in the context of waveshaper/drive type effects than synth filters, so I first noticed the issue with the filter set to WS. Then I started twiddling with drive and resonance on the filters and the difference with the filters in Moog, DRC,…
-
@kleptolia Agreed! I guess that’s a better way to put the question: (1) how much more efficient would obsidian remain vs Model D/DRC/etc if it had the option of turning on, for special occasions, as much oversampling as these dedicated analogue modelers do in the filter section? (2) How valuable would that option be for…
-
@cinebent That’s super interesting about audio rate modulation being the more important thing. Model 15 is also up there for that, no? I should clarify, my assumption is that it’s totally fine for there to be uses for synths that aren’t obsidian. Eg: audio rate modulation might be a perfect example of that. My mindset here…

@"Blip Interactive" It would also be helpful to have aftertouch as a mappable source in the midi controller map. Some controllers don’t come with a straightforward way to use cc messages instead of aftertouch messages - eg the seaboard block...
-
Again, maybe I’m missing something, but from my experience so far yes it can, - every single knob is like a modwheel when you’re playing, and the xy pad is even better. AFAIK, there’s is absolutely no problem with support for external modwheel either. Here, I mapped the y axis on my Seaboard to the x and y pad. Could map…
-
@tom_tm I like the idea a lot.
-
What @anickt said +1000! It actually takes skills to get nothing wild out of a single obsidian fm oscillator. I especially don’t understand the point about not having a “modwheel”. Is there some actual functionality an on screen modwheel would enable that is missing? Or do they just find the macros page not skeuomorphic…
